Kobolds of Europa

300,000 years ago, kobolds that once existed in the lands of the Forgotten Realm left their caves to find out the land on their doorstep was different then it had been the day before. Afraid, confused, and curious they explored a new place which they would one day come to understand was named Europa.

Kobolds have always been known to be creative in trap making, industrious in mining, and powerful in numbers. Though, they have been as prideful as their beloved dragons they still progressed over time into a civilization. While the other civilizations of humans, dwarves, and elves far exceeded them in advances, kobolds became a machine of industrial mega power hidden in the depths of Europa. Keeping themselves as difficult to find as they always have been, the people above moved on without them. Always seeing kobolds as the stupid or backward species that people had always seen them as. This is what has kept them alive, and this is what still keeps them alive today.

A timeline:

300,000 years ago

Bayaz created Europa, transferring creatures of every kind to keep a balanced ecosystem. Kobolds were one of many.

The kobolds of this time were what you would expect of your standard kobolds from the Forgotten Realms. Kobolds were capable of mining, incredibly proficient at it. They knew how to dig irrigation runways for underground mushroom gardens. Basic levels of writing were possible because the written form of Draconic was originally developed by kobolds in the service of dragons, as dragons themselves see little reason to write. Kobolds of this time used spears and slings as weapons, they eventually learned how to craft bows after scavenging them from other small humanoids that used them.

200,000 years ago

Kobolds were happy sticking to their ways for an incredibly long time. They would look for dragons to serve but it was rare. Other peoples were far and few, this allowed kobolds to leave the safety of their caves more frequently. In the safety of the night that had more time to gaze up at the stars. Giving them a chance to learn and develop their own astrology. Believing that the stars was their god Kurtulmak’s hall, Darastrixhurthi. That the ground they lived in was the ground beneath the ground (sky). They believed that this new world was a part of Kurtulmak’s fortress at night, but during the day it belong to the other races they had seen.

During this period, they colonized mountainous and coastal regions. Rooting themselves deep with their cavernous lairs they had always built, but also settled on the surface when they discovered safe areas away from predators. These mountainous tribes discovered a form of masonry to reinforce the mine walls. Shaping the excess stone into crude bricks. They also shaped the stone into the first wheel. Creating carts to move the stone around. The tribes that settled on the coast would use high cliff faces and small ledges to navigate and protect the entrances. These tribes eventually scavenged a boat and learned how to make their own small boats. Discovered how to fish with them and create cloth like nets.

150,000 years ago

By this time, the people of the land had spread out far and wide. They had found the kobold homes and those that were least protected where flushed out by warring peoples who wanted the land. Kobolds had forgotten common language and could not speak with the intruding people. A few times, a dragonborn or half dragon would find them, capable of understanding them. These larger humanoids either worked with the kobolds or enslaved them. During this time of enslavement, they learned how to build sewer systems for the larger cities. The tribes lost their progress on large shipbuilding and celestial navigation. Most of the farms and stables were destroyed or stolen. Forcing a dependence on seed storage and underground gardens. This was a time of war for the kobolds, and they fought back with everything they had.

The more rooted and formidable underground cites developed military strategy and science well beyond the normal tactics used by most civilizations. They had no choice but to become strategic and tactical masters when combating with most creatures due to their small and weak statures. They developed stronghold architecture such as moats, crenellations, sally ports, etc. greatly improving city defenses. The trap making skill improved so drastically that it almost seemed alien in design. Circular floor designs would turn into a gyro of razors capable of shredding creatures and armor into viscera and scrap metal. Pools of water would turn lethal as fan blades of glass or crystal sharpened and angled to barely disturb the water’s surface while eviscerating anything that fell deeper than 2 or 3 feet. The blood red pools better equipped to hide red scaled kobolds into advantage points for ambushes. These feats of mathematical engineering would become well known all across the lands.

Industry changed when kobolds discovered steel. Discovering the concepts of alloys and how to combine elements in their forges drastically changed their outlook on furnace construction and elemental bonding. The sorcerers and inventors established their first official geomic labs to study rocks and the different elements. They built alchemical furnaces using a continual flame after discovering the attributes of rubies and its connection to arcane fire. Most kobolds had discovered the need to store information and built public libraries available to all members of the tribe.

125,000 years ago

Most kobold cities had been destroyed, forcing the kobolds underground into the shadows once again. The remaining civilized kobolds turned their last 5 cities into vaults and sealed themselves away. Most kobolds that were trapped outside of these walls never made it to those cities, believing them destroyed or getting themselves killed on the journey. Some got away and rebuilt tribes that devolved into tribes resembling the culture of the Forgotten Realms. Never again did they successfully combine to become the glorious civilization they had once been.
